Öncü Fights Hard For A Point In Race One

Kawasaki Puccetti Racing rider Can Öncü battled against a less than optimum race set-up to gain a point at Donington Park in the opening WorldSSP race of the weekend.

On Friday 12 July Superpole qualifying took place, under the new race schedule for the 2024 season. Can qualified 14th in Superpole to launch from the fifth row of the grid in Race One.

A suitable race set-up for all 19-laps eluded Can and his pit crew, making it a tough race for the young Turkish rider. Can recorded 11 laps in FP1, compared to the 20 laps of some others, partly due to a technical issue in the first session of the weekend.

At the end of the opening race Can was finally classified 15th, scoring one championship point.

In the current standings Can is 16th overall. One more WorldSSP race remains at Donington before the entire paddock heads to the next round in a few day’s time, at Most in the Czech Republic.

Can Öncü, stated: “Today’s race was a tough one. Unfortunately, we had little time to work on our bike yesterday, which meant that we haven’t yet found a setup that allows us to be quick. I gave it my all in the race, but I couldn’t do more than fifteenth. Now we’ll work with the data collected today to see if we can improve and be more competitive in tomorrow’s race.”

Marcel Brenner (Viamo Racing by MTM Kawasaki) and Gabriele Giannini (Prodina Kawasaki) retired from the first race at Donington, due to technical issues.
